ICC World Cup 2023: Angelo Mathews will take Matheesha Pathirana’s spot in the Sri Lankan camp, according to a report

A shoulder issue has allegedly prevented young Sri Lankan bowler Matheesha Pathirana from competing in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The game in Hyderabad against Pakistan resulted in a shoulder injury to the right-arm fast. Due to his recovery process, he was unable to attend the matches against Australia and The Netherlands. He was anticipated to play against Australia in Bengaluru, the next match. The 20-year-old has now returned home after failing to make a full recovery from his wound.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-250463″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-how-it-works-amazon-brings-passkeys-support-for-ios-and-web-users-download-2023-10.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com how it works amazon brings passkeys support for ios and web users download 2023 10″ width=”1093″ height=”614″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-how-it-works-amazon-brings-passkeys-support-for-ios-and-web-users-download-2023-10.jpg 299w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-how-it-works-amazon-brings-passkeys-support-for-ios-and-web-users-download-2023-10-150×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1093px) 100vw, 1093px” title=”ICC World Cup 2023: Angelo Mathews will take Matheesha Pathirana's spot in the Sri Lankan camp, according to a report 9″>

Even though Sri Lanka Cricket has not yet officially named a replacement for Pathirana, experienced player Angelo Mathews is now the favorite to join the Lankan team. The latter joined the squad in Lucknow last week after traveling to India last week along with Dushmantha Chameera.

In order to guarantee that the team has suitable substitutes in place to handle eventualities, including an injury to a current squad member, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) selectors made this choice, according to an official SLC release.

Mathews, a 221-game veteran, has been absent from Sri Lanka’s 50-over setup for a time now. In June of this year, he participated in his last ODI, which the Lankans lost by six wickets against Afghanistan. Mathews didn’t bowl but managed only 12 points from 21 balls.

In 221 ODIs, Mathews has amassed 5,865 runs at an average of 41, 40 half-centuries, and 3 centuries. Additionally, he has 120 wickets in this format, with a best of 6/20.

The loss of their leader, Dasun Shanaka, has already hurt the Lankan team. When Sri Lanka lost against Pakistan four days ago, the all-rounder suffered a right thigh injury. Shanaka has been disqualified from the event, according to a statement released by the ICC on October 14.

The ICC announced that Chamika Karunaratne has been accepted as Dasun Shanaka’s replacement in the Sri Lankan team by the event technical committee for the ICC men’s cricket World Cup 2023.
